A few weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to have a huge full moon for two – yes, two in a row – nights! We took advantage of the second night with an awesome backpacking trip, but night one was more laid-back: we went for a full moon paddle.

image2One of the many great things about living in Tahoe is that you can get out on the water any time, including after work! The morning of this paddle, I threw my kayak in the back of the car, packed a few extra layers and a beanie, and headed to work. At 5:30, I left the office and drove across the street to the beach, where we quickly unloaded and pushed out onto the water.

We spent about two hours paddling around, drinking a beer or two, and watching the amazing sunset reflect on the lake around us and then the huge moon slowly come up over the mountains in the distance. In fact, we only paddled back when we realized we were slowly floating away from shore!

Sometimes it’s a little harder living in Tahoe than other places – for example, the nearest Target is 40 minutes away – but times like this make it worth it. It’s hard to be out on the water watching the sun go down with the entire lake to yourself and not be just a little in awe of the beauty of the region.

Maybe Mark Twain put it best when he said “To breathe the same air as angels, you must go to Tahoe.”

Enjoy.
